The Festival of Giants! One of the Nation’s Largest Festival from 10 – 12 July, 2016

It is based in the City of Douai, Northern France bordering Belgium – a hugely popular and well attended festival in the nation since 1530. The giants themselves are huge figures each with their own name and personality deriving from surrounding towns and villages. The Gayant family, consisting of giant’s wife Marie Cagenon and their three children, Jacquot, Fillon and Binbin, are carried through the city. It’s a marvellous few days; a summer carnival atmosphere and a whole host of activities for all ages with the added attraction of great local refreshments!

Big is beautiful at Douai’s Gayant festival, largest carnival parade in the region. The town is packed with people trying to get a good view of the kings of the city; also known as the annual outing of the giants (gayants in local dialect). Costumed dancers and bands accompany the parade of giants that date back to the Middle Ages.

The giants start journey from neighbouring cities to take part in the celebration. Lucky festival goers can sometimes even spot weddings between ally giants! It is a great moment and you can even take your kids along.
