Established in 1968 as Sahakol Air, Bangkok Airways was the first airline to become operational in Thailand. With its first aircraft - Trade Wind, which was a nine-seater plane, it became Thailand’s first privately-owned domestic airline. In 1989, it re-branded to become Bangkok Airways and is owned by Prasert Prasarttong-Osoth with 92.31% shares, Sahakol Estate (4.3%), Bangkok Dusit Medical Services (1.2 %), and other shareholders (2.19 %).

In April 1989, Bangkok Airways built its own airport on Ko Samui and offers direct flights between the island and Chiang Mai, Krabi, Hong Kong, Singapore and Phuket. In 1996, the airline opened its second airport at Sukhothai Province and in 2003, third airport was built in Trat Province to serve the growing tourism of Ko Chnag. They made their first foray into jet aircraft in 2000 with Boeing 717s, after that this airline had flown various aircrafts mainly ATR-72. It had also operated Shorts 330, De Havilland Canada Dash 8 and Fokker F100 for short time. In 2004, the carrier added another jet – the Airbus A320 to its fleet.
The current fleet of Bangkok Airways has 12 Airbus 319s, 8 Airbus 320s, 8 ATR 72-500s and 7 ATR72-600s, and each aircraft is decorated with different liveries of various destinations. It has codeshare agreement with plenty of airlines including, Aeroflot, Air Astana, Air Berlin, Air France, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Etihad Airways, EVA Air, Finnair, Garuda Indonesia, Japan Airlines, KLM, Korean Air, Lao Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, Qatar Airways, SilkAir, Singapore Airlines.
In November 2015, Bangkok Airways announced to expand its footprint in Vietnam, China and Myanmar.

Economy Class: Maximum weight allowance is 20 kilograms for adult and child; 10 kilograms for infant.
Blue Ribbon Class (Business Class): Maximum weight allowance is 30 kilograms for adult and child; 10 kilograms for infant.

One item of cabin baggage for adult and child (except infant).
In ATR72 aircraft, cabin baggage size should be 44 x 28 x 23 centimeter with 5 kilograms as maximum weight.
In Airbus 319 aircraft, cabin baggage size should be 56 x 36 x 23 centimeter with 5 kilograms as maximum weight.
In Airbus 320 aircraft, cabin baggage size should be 56 x 36 x 23 centimeter with 5 kilograms as maximum weight.
3. Excess Baggage Rate Charge
Domestic : THB (Thailand Baht, currency) 80 per kilogram, per sector will be applied.
International: Below zonal rate per portion of travel will be applied
One checked baggage maximum weight is 32 kilograms; if baggage weight exceeds 32 kilograms per one piece, the baggage must be re-packed.
4. Exceptional Baggage
The various exceptional baggage including sporting equipments, bicycle, golf set, Scuba Equipments and Surfboard / Kiteboard are also allowed. Dimensions allowance of these equipments varies depending on aircraft. Few types of equipment can be considered as existing baggage allowance while others can only count as excess baggage.

3. iPad Minis
iPad minis are provided to Blue Ribbon Class passengers (Business class) as in-flight entertainment. The iPad minis come equipped with variety of movies, TV shows, music as well as games. These iPad minis are offered to all business class travelers at no cost.
Bangkok Airways provide unaccompanied minor service for minors (aged between 6 to 12 years) who are traveling alone without a guardian. Children aged between 12-16 years are not required to use unaccompanied service but can be provided if requested. Parents or guardian have to stay with child until boarding. The child is escorted by ground staff of Bangkok Airways and handed over to the cabin crew who will look after child during the flight.
Bangkok Airways representative will bring the child from the aircraft to the arrival gate, adult picking up the unaccompanied minor have to arrive at the gate prior to the aircraft’s arrival. Thereafter adult have to provide identification for verification purposes to the Bangkok Airways representative and after verification adult have to sign a release form.
